Rider coach Kevin Baggett is adding some NBA experience to his bench for the upcoming season.
The Broncs have hired former NBA veteran and Connecticut star Donyell Marshall as an assistant coach, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed Thursday.
The person spoke on a condition of anonymity because the deal is yet to be finalized, but an announcement is expected soon.
Marshall, 40, spent 2011-12 as an assistant coach for the D-League Maine Red Claws. He also had a stint as an assistant at George Washington and was a post-game analyst for the Philadelphia 76ers on Comcast SportsNet.
Marshall, a first-round pick (fourth overall) of the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1994, spent 15 seasons in the NBA, suiting up for Minnesota, Golden State, Utah, Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland, Seattle and most recently the Sixers during the 2008-09 season, his last in the league.
He averaged 11.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game for his career and holds the NBA record for most 3-pointers in a game when he connected on 12 of 19 while playing for the Raptors against the Sixers.
A Reading, Pa., native, Marshall was the Big East Player of the Year and a consensus All-American in 1994. He averaged 25.1 points per game in his junior season at UConn before entering the NBA Draft.
Marshall completes Baggett’s staff for the upcoming season, which also includes a new director of basketball operations, Paul Johnson.
Baggett promoted John Griffin from DOB to assistant coach after Lou Rowe left to take a position on the staff at Florida International. Marshall replaces Michael Cotton, who went to North Carolina Central.
Rider went 19-15 last year, finishing second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in Baggett’s debut season.
The 2013-14 season opens Nov. 12 on the road against Lehigh.
