Who: Princeton (4-6) at Bucknell (8-4)

When: Thursday, 7 p.m., Sojka Pavilion, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania

TV/ Radio: None/ WPRB 103.3 FM

Last Time Out: Princeton lost to Monmouth, 96-90; Bucknell def. Mount St. Mary’s, 81-65

Series History: Princeton leads 13-4

Background: There’s no time for the Tigers to feel sorry for themselves coming off Tuesday’s loss at Monmouth with a trip to one of the Patriot League’s top two teams on tap. The Bison are the third team from that league to face Princeton. The Tigers lost to Lehigh and beat Lafayette.

Cook and Cannady Show: Steven Cook and Devin Cannady both scored career highs on Tuesday, and while it wasn’t enough to overcome an explosive Monmouth team, if those two play at that level the remainder of the season, the Tigers will be hard to beat. Cook dropped 30 on 12-for-18 shooting, while Cannady finished with 26.

Who Fills the Void?: With both Hans Brase and Henry Caruso done for the season, coach Mitch Henderson needs players to step up. Sophomore Myles Stephens, who does a lot of the same glue-guy work that Caruso did, has locked down one of the starting spots, but you get the sense minutes are there to be had at the center spot. Senior Pete Miller has been starting since Brase went down, but freshman Will Gladson and sophomore Alec Brennan have also received minutes.

Scouting Bucknell: The Bison are 6-2 in their last eight games as well as 4-0 at home this season. Led by a pair of forwards — 6-foot-7 Zach Thomas (16.3 ppg) and 6-foot-9 Nana Foulland (14.8 ppg) — look for them to crash the boards for coach Nathan Davis’ team. Even though Bucknell only grabs 8.9 offensive boards per contest, Princeton is vulnerable in that area because of its injures. The Tigers competed hard on the glass against Monmouth — not a particularly strong rebounding team — but were still out-rebounded by eight. But they also knocked down 14 shots from beyond the arc, which will be open again since the Bison are allowing opponents to connect on 39.7 percent of their 3-point attempts.Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-19420327470083514412016-12-22T15:49:00.002-05:002016-12-22T15:49:21.106-05:00Rider Gameday: at UMass

Who: Rider (8-3) at UMass (8-3)

When: Thursday, 7 p.m., Mullins Center, Amherst, Massachusetts

TV/ Radio: None/ 107.7 FM The Bronc

Last Time Out: Rider def. North Carolina A&T, 60-59; UMass def. Kennesaw State, 95-77

Series History: UMass leads 8-0

Background: The Broncs, winners of five straight, can take the Gotham Classic title with a victory over the Minutemen. Both schools are 3-0 in the round-robin event. Rider and UMass are meeting for the first time since Nov. 12, 2010 when the Broncs coughed up a 22-point lead and allowed the Minutemen to score the biggest comeback victory in the Derek Kellog era.

Rest for the Weary: Coming off a stretch of four games in eight days, Rider was grateful for three days of rest before trekking north. The Broncs looked tired on Sunday, barely escaping NC A&T with a victory. That said, with some bounce back in their step, they’ll have a chance to beat UMass for the first time in nine tries.

Jordan MAAC Rookie of the Week: Freshman Stevie Jordan continued his excellent start to the season, picking up the weekly honor for the second time. The Bensalem, Pa., native averaged 13.3 points, eight assists and five rebounds in three victories. He also upped his season points per game total to 10, joining Jimmie Taylor (14.6), Kahlil Thomas (13.5), Xavier Lundy (11.8) and Norville Carey (10.2) to put all five Rider starters into double figures.

Scouting UMass: It’s been tough to win in Amherst for non-conference opposition. The Minutemen are 30-3 in their last 33 non-league home games at the Mullins Center, dating back to the 2011-12 season. Freshman guard Luwane Pipkins has been on a roll, earning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after averaging 19 points in victories over North Carolina A&T and Kennesaw State. Junior guard Donte Clark is the tam’s top scorer at 14.5 points, while 6-foot-11, 310-pound sophomore center Rashaan Holloway — out of Schalik in South Jersey — anchors the frontcourt at 9.1 points and 4.9 rebounds.Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-21128911915470419022016-12-20T16:06:00.002-05:002016-12-20T16:07:50.261-05:00Can Princeton, down two starters, halt Monmouth's winning streak?

Time for Plan C.

A season with so much expectation is still just nine games old, yet Princeton has been backed into a corner by season-ending injuries to starting forwards Hans Brase and Henry Caruso.

Can the wounded Tigers (4-5) come out swinging on Tuesday night when they travel to West Long Branch for an in-state clash against red-hot Monmouth (7 p.m., OceanFirst Bank Center, ESPN3, WPRB 103.3 FM)?

The Hawks (9-2) have won a program-record eight straight games are coming off a victory at Memphis, their sixth win over a high-major program in the last two seasons. Monmouth also counts UCLA, USC, Notre Dame, Georgetown and Rutgers among its victims.

“I still have confidence in the group,” Princeton coach Mitch Henderson said. “Maybe we were thinking too much about who wasn’t here. It’s still a basketball game. They still have to play.”

It’s not as though the Tigers don’t have capable players. The starting lineup still features three seniors who were a huge part of the team that won 22 games a year ago and is still arguably the favorite in the Ivy League.

Meanwhile, sophomore Devin Cannady has already assumed the starting point guard role, relegating the regressing Amir Bell to the bench, while Myles Stephens, another sophomore, will take Caruso’s place in the lineup.

Last season’s team played without Brase, so when he went down with a right knee injury on Nov. 29 against VCU, filling that void with essentially the same roster, just a year older, seemed do-able. But replacing Caruso’s 15 points and 6.2 rebounds will prove challenging.

In a 76-68 loss to St. Joseph’s last time out, the Tigers were out-rebounded, 58-34, including 19 on the offensive glass.

“We just got to be tougher,” said Stephens, a promising talent, who did his best in place of Caruso, scoring 12 points and grabbing six boards in his first career start. “We know we’re undersized.”

Monmouth averages 11.8 offensive rebounds per game, but the Hawks’ real strength lies in its backcourt trio of Justin Robinson, Micah Seaborn and Je’lon Hornbeak.

Robinson, the 5-foot-8 point guard dynamo, averages 16.6 points and 5.1 assist per contest. With him pulling the strings, Monmouth shoots the 3-pointer at a 36.4 percent clip and takes just over 25 per game.

Considering the Hawks score 78.9 points per game and the Tigers check in at 72.2, while also averaging 10-for-28 from long range, this has the potential to be a back-and-forth contest.

Steven Cook’s 13.4 points tops the Princeton lineup, but Cannady, who is yet to have a breakout game since assuming the starting point guard role, should rise to the challenge.

Cannady is shooing 32.5 percent (14-for-43) since taking over during the team’s trip to Hawaii, but that may be attributed to his expanded responsibility.

“I think I need to keep working on being an extension of coach on the court,” he said. “Finding my looks within the offense, (while) helping the team get the best shots. We’re focusing on being solid defensively, for me, I’m just in the game four minutes earlier and I’m trying to get us off to a good start.”

Princeton leads the all-time series 11-4, although this is the first meeting between the two schools since a 64-61 Tigers victory in 2010.Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-87045149785190162542016-12-16T15:29:00.001-05:002016-12-16T15:29:05.890-05:00Rider Gameday: vs. Drexel

When: Friday, 7 p.m., Alumni Gymnasium

TV/ Radio: None/ 107.7 FM The Bronc

Last Time Out: Rider def. Kennesaw State, 81-79; Drexel lost to St. Joe's, 72-71

Series History: Drexel leads 30-27

Background: This is a quick turnaround for the Broncs after escaping with a two-point victory over Kennesaw Sate on Wednesday, but another win Friday would be a fourth straight. These two schools haven't met since 2012 when Rider won in Philadelphia.

Backcourt Playing Well: Senior Jimmie Taylor and freshman Stevie Jordan both set career highs last time out. Taylor poured in 26 points on 10-for-16 shooting and made a season-best six 3-pointers. Jordan, meanwhile, became the first Bronc to dish out 10 or more assists in a game since Jon Thompson did it against Niagara on Feb. 5, 2012. Jordan is averaging 5.5 assist per game (50 total against 27 turnovers).

Seal the Deal: Head coach Kevin Baggett knows his team has been fortunate to escape with two of its victories during this three-game winning streak. Against Siena, the Saints grabbed eight offensive rebounds in final 2:22, yet the Broncs found away to hold on for a two-point win. Against Kennesaw State, the Owls shot 71.4 percent from beyond the arc (10-for-14) and had a chance to steal a win, just like Siena did, with a 3-pointer they ended up missing. Ironically, both of those missed shots came at the same basket. "The ball has bounced in our favor this year compared to last year," Baggett said. "We'll take it."

Scouting Drexel: The Dragons are under the direction of first-year coach Zach Spiker. The former Army boss replaced Bruiser Flint, Baggett's friend and former teammate at St. Joe's, after he was let go following a 6-25 campaign. Rider's current director of basketball operations, Chandler Fraser-Pauls, appeared in five games for Drexel last season as a graduate transfer. On the court, the Dragons are coming off a one-point loss to St. Joe's where they couldn't hold a double-digit advantage. Rodney Williams (16.7 pts, 6.4 reb) is the player to watch. He had 29 points and 10 rebounds against the Hawks.

When: Wednesday, 7 p.m., Alumni Gymnasium

Last Time Out: Rider def. Pacific, 73-66; Kennesaw State lost to Michigan, 82-55

Series History: First meeting

Background: This is Rider’s second of four games in the Gotham Classic and the only one it plays at home. The Broncs are 1-0 in the Classic following their win at Pacific. They go to North Carolina A&T and UMass next week.

Defense Travels: Kevin Baggett’s clubs have always hung their hats on the defensive end, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Rider is 5-0 when holding the opposition under 70 points. “Our guys are getting better defensively,” Baggett said following the victory over Pacific. “They understand that we hang our hat on the defensive end. Sixty-five is that number that we look for. Obviously, they had 66. They shot the three well late in the second half. But we know that defense travels.”

Taylor Made: Jimmie Taylor is putting together a solid senior season. The Floridian leads the team in scoring (13.1 ppg) and minutes played (35.4). In fact, Taylor has sat for just 37 minutes all season. He’s also tallied in double figures in four of the last five games and is connecting on a career-best 80.6 percent from the foul line.

Scouting Kennesaw State: The Owls, out of the Atlantic Sun, have a few familiar names on their bench. Head coach Al Skinner spent 13 seasons at Boston College, winning 247 games between 1997-2010, including six NCAA Tournament appearances in seven years. Skinner’s associate head coach at Kennesaw is Michael Cotton, who served one season under Baggett at Rider in 2012-13. On the court, the Owls are led by Quinnipiac transfer Kendrick Ray (22.3 ppg) and Aubrey Williams (13.1 pts./ 11.8 reb.).Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-44051123311871853742016-12-14T13:05:00.001-05:002016-12-14T13:05:05.511-05:00Princeton Gameday: vs. St. Joseph'sWho: St. Joseph’s (4-4) at Princeton (4-4)
When: Wednesday, 5 p.m., Jadwin Gym

TV/ Radio: ESPNU/ WPRB 103.3 FM

Last Time Out: Princeton def. Liberty, 67-64; St. Joe’s def. Drexel, 72-71

Series History: Princeton leads 8-7

Background: The Tigers kick off a crucial three-game non-league stretch against similar opposition on Wednesday when the Hawks visit Jadwin for the return game of a home-and-home that began last season when Princeton travelled to Philly. The Tigers follow up with a pair of tricky road games next week at Bucknell and Monmouth.

Mr. Assist: Spencer Weisz isn’t listed as a point guard, but as coach Mtich Henderson has said on more than one occasion, the senior from Florham Park might as well just be one. Weisz dished out a career-best 13 assists (he also scored 7 points and grabbed 7 rebounds) in the win at Liberty. The Tigers are coming off a contest in which they shot 45.9 percent from long range. That number includes a season-high 17 made 3-pointers.

No Brase: Senior forward Hans Brase’s Princeton career is over. Brase re-injured his right knee, the same one that cost him all of last season, late in the first half of the team’s loss at VCU. Brase was just starting to find his rhythm when the injury occurred, making it a significant loss for the Tigers. Working in Princeton’s favor is that the players who went 22-7 without Brase last season is the same, so senior Pete Miller should transition smoothly back into the starting lineup.

Scouting St. Joe’s: Phil Martelli’s club snapped a four-game losing streak when it held on to beat city-rival Drexel by a point. The Hawks graduated their top three scores from last season’s Atlantic 10 championship team and had another, James Demery, go down with an injury i the season opener. That left Shavar Newkirk to pick up the scoring load, which he’s done to the tune of 21.1 points per game.

Last Time Out: Rider def. Siena, 71-69; Pacific lost to UMass, 72-48

Series History: First Meeting

Background: This is the first of four games in the Gotham Classic for Rider, which hosts Kennesaw State on Dec. 14 before travelling to North Carolina A&T on Dec. 18 and UMass on Dec. 22.

X-Factor: Xavier Lundy is quietly going about his business with a solid senior campaign. The former Paulsboro High star leads the Broncs in scoring at 13.4 points and is coming off a 20-point effort in the win over Siena. Lundy said his mindset now is to put together a complete 40-minute performance. He tends to start off hot before fading in the second half, but made strides toward that against the Saints, when he came up with a tough basket that gave Rider the lead late in the second half.

That 70s Show: Seventy has been the magic number thus far for the Broncs. When they hold the opposition below the 70-point threshold, they are 4-0 . When they don’t, well, 0-3.

Scouting Pacific: The Tigers, under first-year coach Damon Stoudamire, have lost three of their last four and are coming off their worst offensive showing to do date, scoring just 48 points at UMass. Ray Bowles paces Pacific at 14.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, while T.J. Wallace has added 13.1 points and a team-leading 2.6 assists. He’s also made an efficient 9-of-17 from long range. The Tigers are 3-0 at home, however, this game will be played at the off-campus Stockton Arena where they haven’t played since a 79-54 loss to California on Dec. 9, 2009.Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-66125160662798408222016-12-10T12:16:00.001-05:002016-12-10T12:16:07.966-05:00Princeton Gameday: at Liberty

This also brings to a close Princeton’s week-long journey of close to 15,000 miles. The Tigers trekked to Hawaii for a pair of games in the Pearl Harbor Invitational on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mr. 100: Princeton coach Mitch Henderson is one victory shy of 100 for his career. When he gets that win, he will be the sixth coach in program history to reach that mark. With 17 more victories, Henderson will become the third winningest coach in history behind only Franklin “Cappy” Cappon (250) and Hall of Famer Pete Carril (514).

Shake it up: Sophomore Devin Cannady was preferred at point guard to junior Amir Bell for the two games at Pearl Harbor. Usually instant offense coming off the bench, Cannady didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, going 5-for-19 in the two games, although everybody struggled in the opening game against Cal. Whether Cannady stays as a starter or shifts back to a super-sub role remains to be seen, but no matter what his role is, the Tigers must get more out of Bell. The East Brunswick product is averaging 2.9 points and has 11 assists to 10 turnovers for the year.

Scouting Liberty: The Flames have dropped two straight and three of their last four. Two of their four wins are against non-Division I competition, so the Tigers, if they can get their weary road legs under them, should be the favorite. Liberty, like Princeton, also lost to VCU, dropping that contest, 64-59, at the Vines Center. Sophomore Caleb Homesley is the top threat for the Flames, averaging 12.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest.Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-13057529822265373112016-12-05T22:34:00.001-05:002016-12-05T22:34:57.539-05:00Rider's Stevie Jordan plays with five stitches in lip

Stevie Jordan laughed when asked how he ended up needing five stitches around his lip during last Thursday's MAAC opener against Fairfield.

No he didn't hit the camera like one of the officials told coach Kevin Baggett. And no he didn't smash into a Fairfield players knee like the video replay seemed to suggest.

"I hit my own knee," the freshman point guard said with a smile.

Jordan spent the majority of that game Thursday night in the training room getting stitched up and fitted for a protective mask. The only problem was he couldn't see out of the mask and ended up last just 1:40 after convincing both the training staff and Baggett he was OK to continue.

After three days of practice, Jordan decided he wasn't going to wear the mask. He was pretty demonstrative about that.

When: Monday, 7 p.m., Alumni Gymnasium

TV/ Radio: None/ 107.7 FM The Bronc

Last Time Out: Rider lost to Fairfield, 76-67; Siena def. Fairfield, 80-73.

Series History: Siena leads 30-15

Background: Looking to avoid an 0-2 start in the MAAC, the Broncs host the Saints to finish a mini two-game homestand.

Stitched Up: Freshman point guard Stevie Jordan played just 11 minutes in Thursday’s loss to Fairfield after he suffered a cut to his lip area that required stitches. The injury occurred when Jordan was inadvertently kneed in the face while falling to the ground. He tried to return in the second half, but was quickly removed because he couldn’t see out of the protective mask. Just how much and how effective he can be on Monday depends on how comfortable he is wearing whatever protection the training staff comes up with for the cut.

Cold Shooting: The Broncs connected on a season-high five 3s against Fairfield, but that hardly helped a dismal shooting percentage. For the season, Rider has made just 22.1 percent (21 for 95) from beyond the arc. Kevin Baggett’s team has been able to cover for that deficiency in its three victories with solid defense by limiting to the opposition to less than 70 points in those three wins.

Scouting Siena: The Saints, coached by the gregarious Jimmy Patsos, who won his 200th career game last time out, were picked to finish second in the MAAC. They’ve had an up-and-down start, however, with all five of their losses coming on the road. Siena has five players scoring in double figures led by all-league guard Marquis Wright (18 ppg). The Saints are also talented in the front court with the trio of Javion Ogunyemi (14.1/ 5.5), Lavon Long (12.4/ 5.8) and Brett Bisping (10.3/ 8.3). Sophomore Nico Clareth is coming off a career-best 33 points in Siena’s win over Fairfield.

Spend a full month on the road and you can find out something about your team.

Rider head coach Kevin Baggett uses the word resilient to describe his group five games into the season, all of which have been played away from home.

“We’ve been in every game,” Baggett said. “Even when we got blown out (in) the first half at Fordham, we found a way to come back in the second half. I think we’re going to continue to get better and learn from all of the things we’re going through now to be a good team when it’s all said and done.”

Considering the circumstances, the Broncs are in pretty good shape, sitting at 3-2 after their November road show. They finally get to play in front of what should be a boisterous Alumni Gymnasium crowd when they open both the home and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference slate on Thursday night against the Fairfield (7 p.m., 107.7 FM The Bronc).

“We just had to stay together,” freshman point guard Stevie Jordan said. “Those road trips get long and we get tired, but we had to stay together and play hard.”

Rider, of course, wants to start strong in league play and that means trying to slow down Sydney Johnson’s Runnin’ Stags.

Fairfield swept the two games last season after Johnson ditched the plodding Princeton offense for a run-and-shoot style. The result was a jump from seven wins to 19.

In Year 2 of the Runnin’ Stags, the Connecticut school is off to a 4-1 start, averaging 75 points per game (by contrast Fairfield was putting up 59.5 two seasons ago).

While Baggett hasn’t gone to the extremes of his counterpart, he said in preseason he wanted to push the ball more and avoid having to grind every possession in the halfcourt. So far, Rider has upped its scoring from 66 points per game to 69.6 despite shooting a dismal 20.8 percent (16-for-77) from beyond the arc.

Still, the Broncs managed to win three times during their five-game November road trip.

How?

As Baggett likes to point out, defense travels, and all three of those victories came when they held the opponent under 70 points. They have also won the battle on the boards in all five contests.

“We’re a good defensive team and we can rebound the ball really well,” senior forward Kahlil Thomas said. “We just have to take care of the ball better.”

Now time for some home cooking.

Finally.

“I can’t wait,” Jordan said.Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-2423893698911178032016-03-02T21:19:00.003-05:002016-03-02T21:19:41.130-05:00What To Watch For: MAAC Tournament

Here are some things to watch at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament that gets underway on Thursday night at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y.

The Favorite: Monmouth has been the best team throughout the year, winning the regular-season title. The Hawks are led by dynamic point guard Justin Robinson (20.2 ppg) and sharpshooting freshman Micah Seaborn (13 ppg, 39.3 percent from 3).

Home Court: Siena coach Jimmy Patsos unsuccessfully tried to claim his Saints won’t have an advantage in their home building. He cited a neutral floor design and different locker rooms, but ask Iona or Monmouth what they think when 10,000 screaming Siena faints pack the place for a potential semifinal and final.

The Sleeper: Fourth-seeded Saint Peter’s. The Peacocks, coached by the underrated John Dunne, are the top defensive unit in the league and can make life difficult for free-flowing offensive sides like Monmouth, Iona and Siena. The last time SPU dances, it did it form the No. 4 position.

Seed is Just a Number: The No. 1 seed in the MAAC Tournament hasn’t gone on to win since Siena did it in 2010. The lowest seed to ever claim the crown was No. 8, when Fairfield did it in 1997.

At-Large: Monmouth, thanks to some quality non-league wins (Notre Dame, USC), has been in the NCAA Tournament discussion all season. King Rice’s team can grab the auto bid by winning the whole thing, but if the Hawks were to fall short might they become the second MAAC school in the last five years to grab an at-large?

Player to Watch: Iona’s A.J. English had scouts showing up in New Rochelle in droves, but can he deliver a MAAC title for the Gaels? Iona’s come up short the last two seasons, falling to archrival Manhattan in the championship both times. English led the league in scoring, averaging 22.3 point per game.

Three-Peat: Hard to see Manhattan, losers of five of their last six, running off four straight to win a third straight title, but if anyone can do it, love him or loathe him, it’s Steve Masiello.

Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-26794113783479913832016-02-29T14:57:00.003-05:002016-03-02T21:19:54.572-05:00New approach pays off for Fairfield coach Sydney Johnson

Something had to change.

Fairfield had just finished a 7-24 season with a 63-33 loss to Saint Peter’s in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament and Sydney Johnson’s Stags were the laughingstock of the league, scoring <strike>nine</strike> seven points in the first half of that debacle.

If Johnson was going to keep his job, the style had to change.

And change drastically.

Johnson, who played at Princeton under the Hall of Famer Pete Carril and later coached the Tigers to their last NCAA Tournament berth, shifted from deliberate Princeton sets to an up-tempo style.

“I’ve tried to merge both of them,” Johnson said Monday on the MAAC conference call. “My best teams at Princeton and now at Fairfield have been good transition teams. I think just this year, we’re great at it.”

The Stags are averaging 77.8 points per game, about 19 more per outing than they did last season.

The number of field goal attempts is up from 50.9 per game to 60.3. They are also making 3-pointers at a 36.6 percent clip, better than last season’s 32.2 percent.

Some of that can be attributed to the new 30-second shot clock, but Fairfield still sits 25th nationally in possessions per game (75.9), according to the website teamrankings.com, which measures basketball analytics.

“It’s always kind of been there, we’ve bumped it up a bit and that had to do with recruiting,” Johnson said. “We were able to bring in some guys who could play better in that style. I think it’s paid off.”

The Stags (18-12, 12-8) improved by 11 wins and earned the fifth seed in the conference tournament. They face Saint Peter’s once again, this time in a quarterfinal on Saturday.

Three players earned All-MAAC honors on Monday, led by leading scorer Marcus Gilbert, whose first-team nod puts him on the ballot for Player of the Year. Sophomore Tyler Nelson was a second-team selection and Curtis Cobb landed on the rookie team.

Johnson said his players took the shift in philosophy in stride.

“All of them looked at me like they didn’t understand what the big deal was because for them that’s how they came up, that’s how they learned the game, that’s why we were interested in bringing them here,” the fifth-year coach said. “In a team meeting, I’m kind of prepared to unveil this to them and they’re all kind of just nodding their head like, ‘all right let’s get down to business and just do it.’”

Johnson also made changes to his staff, bringing in a pair of former MAAC head coaches in Mitch Buonaguro and Tom Parrotta.

“The biggest thing is the incredible amount of experience the two of them bring both with the flow of the games and just how we work our team from media timeout to media timeout,” Johnson said. “Recruiting-wise a really keen eye for the talent that can excel in this league. Both of them have recruited some of the best players this league has ever had.”

Johnson, the 1997 Ivy League Player of the Year, went on to a seven-year professional career overseas. He played in Italy and Spain with a 24-second shot clock and maybe learned the most important lesson of all.

“Getting buckets,” he said, “is how you kept your job.”Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-36639728606613574412016-02-29T12:18:00.005-05:002016-02-29T12:18:46.841-05:00Teddy Okereafor, Kahlil Thomas named 3rd Team All-MAAC

When: Friday, 6 p.m.; Saturday, 6 p.m., Jadwin Gym

TV/Radio: Columbia —American Sports Network/ WPRB 103.3 FM; Cornell —WPRB 103.3 FM

Previous Meeting: Princeton swept the New York weekend two weeks ago, coming from behind to beat Columbia in overtime in the Saturday game.

Scouting Columbia: The Lions’ season is on the line. A loss all but eliminates them from the Ivy chase. They had Princeton beat at Levien, but couldn’t hold a nine-point lead in the final three minutes and eventually lost in overtime despite scoring the first seven points of the extra session. Four Columbia players average in double figures, led by senior guard Maodo Lo (16.2 ppg). Jadwin hasn’t been a place the Lions win often. They have lost 22 of their last 23 visits.

Scouting Cornell: The Tigers drilled the Big Red with a huge first half in the first meeting. The key here will be getting up for the game after the huge Columbia game on Friday. Cornell plays at Penn on Friday. The Big Red do have two explosive scorers in Matt Morgan (19.1 ppg) and Robert Hatter (17.3 ppg).

Scouting Princeton: The Tigers know what they need to do. Win their final five games and they can do no worse than a one-game playoff for the Ivy’s automatic NCAA berth. Princeton’s been consistent this season, starting the same five players in all 23 games. Coach Mitch Henderson also has the X-factor in the Ivy race on his bench in freshman Devin Cannady. Cannady saved the Tigers at Columbia with a pair of 3s in the last 10 seconds to force overtime. Princeton is a perfect 10-0 at home.

Inside the Tigers: When it was suggested to ESPN's Bubble Watch that it take a closer look at Princeton, the Tigers' resume was dismissed, but we'll at least present the numbers for you. With an 18-5 record, RPI of 39 and SOS of 122, the computers numbers aren't bad. What hurts the Tigers is a lack of quality wins. They've beat just one opponent in the top 100 (vs. Yale), and while they don't have any bad losses (all five teams they lost to would be in the NCAA Tournament if the season ended today), they are 1-5 against the top 100. Princeton's been impressive in the games its supposed to win and will be favored in its last five beginning Friday night against Columbia. Say the Tigers finish 5-0 and fall to Yale in the Ivy playoff. That would put them at 23-6 overall with an RPI likely in the top 50. Still, the best -- and probably only -- route to the NCAA tourney is through the auto bid.
When: Friday, 9 p.m., Multipurpose Activities Center, West Long Branch

TV/Radio: ESPN2/ 107.7 FM The Bronc

Last Time Out: Rider lost to Marist, 71-58; Monmouth def. Saint Peter’s, 92-85 in overtime

Previous Meeting: You know what happened. Rider let a 14-point lead with four minutes remaining slip as Monmouth won, 79-78, by scoring 17 of the game’s final 19 points.

Scouting Monmouth: The Hawks can clinch at least a share of the MAAC title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament with a victory. They’ll have to do it without third-leading scorer Deon Jones, who broke his hand in Monmouth’s loss to Iona. King Rice’s team, however, has plenty of weapons to make up for Jones’ absence. First and foremost, Justin Robinson (20.3 ppg), who hit the game winning shot at Alumni Gym with 3.8 seconds left. Freshman Micah Seaborn (12.5 ppg) is in the conversation for Rookie of the Year. History indicates this game will be close. Five of the six meetings between the schools since Monmouth joined the MAAC have been decided by six points or less.

Scouting Rider: Since coming so close to knocking off Monmouth, the Broncs have been trending in the wrong direction. They are 1-2 since then and are coming off a discouraging 13-point setback at last-place Marist. Senior guard Zedric Sadler (ankle), injured against Niagara, missed his second straight game. Without Sadler, Rider only had eight available players. The Broncs need an improved Teddy Okereafor to have a chance. He’s only attempted five free throws in the last four games.

Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-75307539477542051492016-02-19T13:37:00.004-05:002016-02-19T13:37:52.038-05:00Princeton Gameday: vs. Yale

Series This Year: Yale held off a Princeton comeback in the first meeting, winning, 79-75 in New Haven.

What It Mean: It really doesn't get any bigger than this. Since Yale captured the first meeting, Princeton needs to win or its chances of an Ivy League title are severely damage. A defeat for the Tigers means they would need to win their remaining six league games, while the Bulldogs lose two of their last five. That's highly unlikely. A Princeton victory puts it in position to at least earn a one-game playoff by winning out, if not the title outright if Yale slips up.

Scouting Yale: The Bulldogs are good. Really good. They've won 12 straight and have little trouble running their Ivy record to 8-0. Three players average in double figures led by Plainfield native Justin Sears at 16.5 points per game. Sears also hauls in 6.9 rebounds per contest and is considered the favorite to capture Ivy League Player of the Year. Brandon Sherrod chips in 11.7 points and 7.3 boards and recently set an NCAA record by making 30 consecutive field goals. The Bulldogs clean the glass better than any team in the league, posting a rebound margin of +11.4. The Tigers are second at 4.8, but if Princeton can't keep Yale off the offensive boards (the Bulldogs get 14 per game) second-chance points could decide the game. Sophomore guard Makai Mason had a big game in the first meeting, scoring 22 points, but he's slightly less effective on the road, shooting 41.8 percent as opposed to 48.3 at home.

Scouting Princeton: The Tigers set up this showdown by stealing a road victory in overtime at Columbia. They scored the first basket, then trailed the entire game until Devin Cannady forced overtime with 3.3 seconds remaining thanks to a long 3-pointer. Princeton has been outstanding at home, posting a perfect 8-0 mark and averaging 87.7 points per game. The Tigers are the top scoring team in the Ivy (79.6 ppg) and second in field goal percentage (45.9) to, you guessed it, Yale (47.1). If Princeton is going to win, it will need a better performance from the trio of Spencer Weisz, Steven Cook and Henry Caruso. Those three went a combined 4 for 24 against Columbia. That's unlikely to happen again, especially at home. The X-factor may be point guard Amir Bell, who had a breakout game against Penn. The Tigers will need him to be at his best, attacking the paint and trying to get easy baskets.Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-74895994032110417272016-02-19T13:08:00.001-05:002016-02-19T13:08:12.159-05:00Rider Gameday: vs. Siena

TV/Radio: ESPN3/ 107.7 FM The Bronc

Last Time Out: Rider def. Niagara, 77-59; Siena def. Iona, 81-78.

Series This Year: Siena used a late 11-0 run to win the first meeting, 63-52, in Albany and are looking for the season sweep.

Scouting Siena: The Saints have vaulted into third place despite playing most of the conference season without star point guard Marquis Wright, who suffered a stress fracture in his foot. Wright, however, is expected to return to the active roster Friday night. How much he plays is still to be determined. The junior has missed the last 15 games with the injury. When he does get on the floor, Wright is one of the most dynamic players in the league. He averaged 17.3 points in 12 games before going down. Even without him, Jimmy Patsos (always worth the price of admission) has gotten solid contributions from four other players scoring in double figures. Keep an eye out for 6-5 freshman guard Nico Clareth off the bench. He's one of the fornt-runners for MAAC Rookie of the Year, posting 13.4 points per game.

Scouting Rider: Siena may be getting one of its best players back, but the Broncs will have to make due without one of theirs. Senior guard Zedric Sadler injured his ankle against Niagara when he landed on top of another player coming down with a rebound. The good news: he didn't break any bones and the hope is he can return before the end of the regular season. A tight bench gets even shorter now. Coach Kevin Baggett was already using an eight-man rotation and if Sadler's out for an extended period of time, he'll have to make due with only eight available players. Rider has already lost two players to season-ending injuries and a third transferred midseason. Watch the battle down low where the Broncs' Kahlil Thomas (11.3/ 8.2) will be matched against the Saints' Javion Ogunyemi (14.8/ 6.0) and Brett Bisping (15.7/ 9.6)Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-71263171228564815512016-02-14T18:54:00.002-05:002016-02-14T18:54:44.512-05:00WATCH: Songs in the Key of Shawn

The visitors are dreaming of a March dance ticket.

Both need victories when Rider (10-15, 6-8) welcomes league-leading Monmouth (20-5, 12-2) to a sold-out Alumni Gymnasium on Friday night (9 p.m., ESPNU, 107.7 FM The Bronc).

“We just got to win, man,” Broncs coach Kevin Baggett said. “We got to find a way to get to the middle of the league where we can stay out of that play-in game. We’ve got (six) games left and it’s going to be nip-and-tuck. Our approach, whether it’s on TV or not on TV, is to try and find ways to win games and try and find our way into that top five.”

Rider lost its first five conference games, but has since righted the ship to go 6-3 in the last nine, splitting the most recent four over an eight-day span.

That’s left the Broncs in a six-team group jostling for position, and as Baggett alluded to, a top-five seed doesn’t have to play on the opening night of the conference tournament.

Four of the last six games are in Lawrenceville.

Of course, two of those six are against the red-hot Hawks, who enter Friday’s tilt carrying a six-game winning streak and an NCAA Tournament at-large profile (RPI: 33; SOS: 152).

Monmouth, which has pulled in fans from across the country thanks to its celebrating bench mob, has a deep roster full of talent.

King Rice’s squad has picked up eye-catching wins over UCLA, USC, Notre Dame and Georgetown.

“They set the tone of things,” Baggett said. “They went out and won some really big games. ... I’m not surprised because I knew the talent they had.”

When Baggett studies the Hawks on tape, his eye always comes back to the same player.

“At the end of the day,” Baggett said, “Justin Robinson is really, really good and he makes that team go.”

Baggett was full of praise for Monmouth’s 5-foot-8 dynamo of a point guard. Robinson ranks third in the conference in scoring, averaging 20.3 points per game.

“You have to do a good job containing him off the ball screens because his change of pace is unlike anybody I’ve seen this year,” Baggett said. “He’s really gotten to understand the game. The game has slowed down for him and he’s dinking in and out of these ball screens ... it’s hard to guard him because he’s small, he’s quick and he can change paces.”

Robinson also shoots the 3-ball at a 42.6 percent clip, which is second in the league.

Rider is likely to use a number of players against Robinson, mainly Zedric Sadler and Teddy Okereafor, two experienced guards. Also look for Shawn Valentine, who at 6-7, uses his length to bother smaller players.

“It’s always good to go up against a good scorer or a good competitor like Robinson,” Sadler said. “Players like that bring the best out of you. You go up to a Niagara and you might get a little lax and not bring as much energy as you would if you played an (A.J.) English or a Justin Robinson. It should be interesting.”

The Hawks have other options as well led by Micah Seaborn (12 ppg), Deon Jones (10.2 ppg) and Collin Stewart (36 percent from beyond the arc) off the bench.

The Broncs, however, have an advantage inside with Kahlil Thomas (11.1 points, 8.0 rebounds), who has posted a league-best 10 double-doubles. He also tops the conference in field goal percentage (58.1).

“He’s arrived,” Baggett said. “He’s honed his skills and he’s playing with a lot of confidence. Our guys are getting him the ball and he’s making good on those post feeds.”

Rider also has history on its side, having won 12 of the last 14 meetings, including a stretch of nine straight until Monmouth stole a victory at Alumni Gym last season. The Broncs responded by clinching second place in the league with a win in West Long Branch.

With a packed Broncs’ Zoo in the stands, keeping the crowd engaged will be vital.

“We’re not trying to lay an egg on our home floor,” Sadler said. “We’re trying to come out and provide energy for the fans. I know they don’t want to come here and cheer nothing. I know they want to come here and cheer us on. That gives us a boost to come out with a little more energy.”

Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-75794311115206939292016-02-12T15:32:00.003-05:002016-02-12T15:32:40.879-05:00Princeton Weekend: at Cornell; at Columbia

TV/ Radio: American Sports Network/ WPRB 103.3 FM; ESPN3/ WPRB 103.3 FM

Last Time Out: Princeton def. Dartmouth, 83-70; Cornell lost to Yale, 83-52; Columbia def. Brown, 77-73

Series History: Princeton leads both, holding a 142-80 edge over Cornell and a 148-85 record against Columbia.

Scouting Cornell: The Big Red were swept on the road last weekend, falling to Brown and Yale. Although Cornell has fallen off since Steve Donahue took them to the Sweet 16, Ithaca has been a tough trip for the Tigers of late, splitting the last four meetings in New York. The Big Red feature the Ivy’s top scorer, Robert Hatter, who averages 18.7 points per game. Princeton leads the conference in scoring, averaging 78.9 points, while Cornell is last in defense.

Scouting Columbia: On paper, this is the tougher of the two games, although the Lions have to come through a game Friday against Penn unscathed first. The Tigers have an excellent record of late in Morningside Heights, winning their last six trips their. In those six games, Princeton has shot 51.3 percent from the field, including 47.5 percent form beyond the arc. Columbia’s best player is its all-Ivy guard Maodo Lo, who averages a team-high 15.7 points. Lo’s not the only weapon for the Lions, who have three other players scoring in double figures — Grant Mullins (13.5), Alex Rosenberg (13.5) and Luke Petrasek (11.6).

Scouting Princeton: The objective for the Tigers is stay the course. A New York sweep would set them up for a massive game next Friday against Yale at Jadwin. The Bulldogs, who lead the league with an unblemished 6-0 mark are at Dartmouth and Harvard this weekend. Interestingly, Princeton goes to Cornell first, which coach Mitch Henderson said he prefers. Keep an eye on junior guard Steven Cook, who averaged 24 points per game in a pair of wins last weekend.

Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-91019295183585250072016-02-07T13:11:00.001-05:002016-02-07T13:11:04.507-05:00Rider Gameday: at Canisius

When: Sunday, 3 p.m., Koessler Athletic Center, Buffalo, N.Y.

TV/Radio: ESPN3/ 107.7 FM The Bronc

Last Time Out: Rider def. Niagara, 66-60; Canisius lost to Iona, 84-66

Series History: Rider has dominated the 43 meetings between the schools, winning 33 of them, including a 79-68 victory in Lawrenceville a week ago.

Scouting Canisius: The Griffs weren’t able to keep pace with Iona on Friday and suffered their fourth straight defeat. Despite this losing run, Canisius still possess a potent attack, especially at home with four players averaging in double figures. The Griffs are thrid in the MAAC in scoring, averaging 78.5 points per game. They also make 8.9 threes per contest, also third.

Scouting Rider: The Broncs can see .500 after a 0-5 start in MAAC play, but they’ll have to repel the Griffs for the second time in a week. Kahlil Thomas collected his conference-leading ninth doubule-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds in the win over Niagara. All nine of Thomas’ double-doubles have come in the last 12 games. While Canisius scores the ball well, Rider leads the MAAC in defense, allowing 67.1 points. A victory Sunday would set the Broncs up for a primetime showdown next Friday against Monmouth at Alumni Gymnasium.Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-84447827890146505572016-02-05T12:59:00.002-05:002016-02-05T12:59:43.441-05:00Princeton Weekend: vs. Harvard; vs. Dartmouth

TV/Radio: ESPNU/ WPRB 103.3 FM; WPRB 103.3 FM

Last Time Out: Princeton lost to Yale, 79-75; Harvard lost to Columbia, 55-54; Dartmouth lost to Cornell, 77-73

Series History: Princeton holds a 130-44 record all-time against Harvard and a 147-42 mark vs. Dartmouth.

Scouting Harvard: If Princeton’s loss put it in catch-up mode in the Ivy League, then the Crimson are in survival mode. Another loss likely extinguishes Harvard’s reign as Ivy champion. The Crimson have represented the conference in the last four NCAA Tournaments. Despite the Tigers’ massive edge in the all-time series, Harvard has won the last four. A victory at Jadwin would also snap a three-game Ivy losing streak, a rare occurrence under ninth-year coach Tommy Amaker. The Tigers have been vulnerable against strong interior players and the Crimson features junior forward Zena Edosomwan, who averages a double-double (14.2 /10.5).

Scouting Dartmouth: The Big Green play Penn at the Palestra on Friday night before stopping off at Jadwin. Evan Boudreaux paces Dartmouth with 16.3 points per game. Dartmouth leads the Ivy in free-throw percentage, connecting on 72.3 percent.

Scouting Princeton: When the Tigers’ rally fell short last Saturday at Yale, they knew the margin for error in the 14-game tournament got slimmer. They now trail both Yale and Columbia by one in the loss column. Princeton still has two games against Columbia, one vs. Yale and a game-in-hand, to be played against Penn on the Tuesday after the rest of the league finishes the regular season. Henry Caruso’s breakout season should earn him First Team All-Ivy honors. He’s averaging a team-best 16.6 points and 6.6 rebounds. He’s also made at least 50 percent of his shots in 13 of 17 games. Interestingly, the Tigers have had the same starting lineup in all 17 games.

Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-32191935001498914762016-02-05T12:56:00.001-05:002016-02-05T12:56:04.433-05:00Rider Gameday: at Niagara

Who: Rider (9-14, 5-7) at Niagara (6-17, 4-8)

When: Friday, 7 p.m., “Taps” Gallagher Center, Niagara Falls, N.Y.

Radio: 107.7 FM The Bronc

Last Time Out: Rider lost to Manhattan, 65-57; Niagara lost to Quinnipiac, 82-68

Series History: Niagara holds a 21-20 edge in the 41 all-time meetings. The two schools split the games a year ago, each winning on the road. The Broncs have won the last three at the Gallagher Center with their lost loss there the infamous clock game.

Scouting Niagara: The Purple Eagles have lost five of six with the lone victory coming against bottom-feeder Marist. NU is a capable opponent at home, especially if Matt Scott and Emile Blackman get rolling. Scott is sixth in the MAAC in scoring (16.9 ppg) and Blackman torched Rider last season in Lawrenceville for 30 points. All four of the Purple Eagles’ league victories have come at home.

Scouting Rider: The Broncs had a three-game winning streak snapped last time out. They had a 55-53 lead with four minutes remaining, but couldn’t string stops together. That’s four games — both Fairfield contests, at Siena and at Manhattan —where Rider has lost a game it probably should have won. The Broncs continue to roll with an eight-man rotation, spearheaded by guard Teddy Okereafor, who leads the team in scoring (14.3 ppg).

Thompson Honored: Jason Thompson is heading into the Rider Hall of Fame. The NBA-veteran, who finished his career in Lawrenceville as the program’s third all-time leading scorer and top rebounder, will spearhead the 2016 class. Also being inducted are Jim McKeown (baseball), Kein Connolly (baseball), Don Fisch (wrestling) and Sarah Artale (soccer). The ceremony will be in June.
Kyle Frankohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07318001557117278756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3871850132276265869.post-55416256625051740052016-02-02T23:59:00.002-05:002016-02-02T23:59:32.702-05:00Postgame audio from Rider's 65-57 loss to ManhattanRiverdale, N.Y. >> Rider lost 65-57 to Manhattan on Tuesday night as the two teams scuffled in the game's final minute.
