Iona's Jordan Washington has been suspended two games for his role in the postgame incident following the Gaels' loss to Monmouth on Friday night. The school announced the suspension on Saturday. Washington will miss Sunday's game at Rider and next Friday's contest vs. Saint Peter's.
Washington can be seen slapping Monmouth's Chris Brady as the two teams go through the handshake line after the Hawks' 110-102 victory in New Rochelle.
"We hold our student-athletes to a higher standard than was displayed last night," Iona head coach Tim Cluess said in a statement. "We should know and will use better judgement in the future, regardless of provocation."
This is the second incident in as many years for Iona where it had to suspend a player for a postgame confrontation. Star guard A.J. English had to sit one game last season for making contact with an official following a victory over Saint Peter's.
Washington, a 6-8 junior forward, had 11 points and five rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench in the Gaels' 67-58 win over Rider on Jan. 7.
Iona has already lost key contributors Schadrac Casimir and Kelvin Amayo for the season due to injury.
Rider (5-12, 1-5) is coming off a 102-100 double overtime triumph against Marist, while the Gaels (9-7, 6-1) had a 26-game home winning streak snapped by Monmouth on Friday.
