Game 5: SMU 83, Rider 70

Rider dropped its second game of the Hoops for Hope Classic, 83-70, Wednesday night at SMU.

Once again, the opponent's hot shooting sunk the Broncs.

Paced by Ryan Manuel's career-high 24 points and 57.1 percent shooting as a team, the Mustangs (5-0) went wire-to-wire, dealing Rider (2-3) its second straight defeat.

SMU also connected on 27 of 34 free throws. Manuel and Jalen Jones both hit 11 of 12 from the stripe.

Two night's after South Carolina, a team shooting 22 percent from beyond the arc made 13, the Mustangs connected on 8 of 11 3-pointers. SMU came in with 16 made 3-pointers through four games.

Cannen Cunningham had 20 points and Jones added 15.

Anthony Myles led Rider with 19 points. Nurideen Lindsey finished with 14 and Jon Thompson chipped in 10.

The Broncs, who closed the first half strongly to trail by four at intermission, got within one possession multiple times midway through the second half, but the Mustangs answered with key baskets each time.

SMU is off to a 5-0 start for the first time since opening 10-0 during the 1997-98 season.

The Broncs continue the Hoops for Hope Classic with a pair of games Friday and Sunday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico against Jacksonville and Wisconsin-Milwaukee, respectively.
